Day 98 Story - How Rumors Build

This story (365 Stories in a Year blog) is about how rumors start and grow. It’s a quick idea based on the fact that people will believe almost anything they hear from a trusted source, no matter how bizarre it might seem.

If you have ever been taken in by a rumor that proved not to be true, read this story.

Day 97 Story - A True Football Story

I actually saw a video of a quarterback doing something like what I wrote about in this story. A bit different but with similar effect.

In the video, the quarterback took the ball from the center and then stood up and started walked with the ball. The opposing players watched him walk, wondering what on earth he was doing. The quarterback walked all the way to the goal line with nobody questioning his actions.

This story (365 Stories in a Year blog) is a bit different but the effect is the same. The point being that deception can at times seem magical, even when done in full view of a crowd in a football stadium.

Many times we see, like the opposing team in this story, what we want to see, not what actually happened. The next time someone surprises you with a move you didn’t expect, just remember this story.

Day 96 Story - Depression and Redemption

This story (365 Stories in a Year blog) is about a man who finds a refuge in a bar. It’s not the beer, it’s the silence that draws him and gives him time to reflect on his condition and his future.

The idea came from thinking about my own peaceful forays to restaurants for lunch or just to sit and read quietly. The bar is simply a fictional reality. It is a great way to create a story, placing a favorite pastime of yours in a completely unusual place you would never find yourself.

Day 95 Story - The Dragon

This is a cute little story that is actually an allegory. In fact readers will get many different perspectives on it depending on their own beliefs. The story itself takes no particular stand on anything. It’s just a story about a missing dragon.

The interest is generated when people take the dragon as a stand in for something else. I had fun writing it. Read it and see what you think it means. And by the way, it does mean something and that something will be different for every person who reads it.

Enjoy.

Day 94 Story - A Perspective on Holidays

Thanksgiving and Christmas have become commercial holidays as well and civic and religious holidays. Sometimes we get so caught up in the hustle and bustle of preparation for the holidays that we seldom enjoy the days as well.

This story (365 Stories in a Year blog) is my look at my Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays of the past. It is interesting that few of them spark many memories. In this story I talk about why that might be.

Day 93 Story - A Truly Important Thanksgiving

This story (365 Stories in a Year blog) affects me deeply since it is about my family’s first Thanksgiving just a few months after I was born. In today’s rush-rush commercial world, we seem to forget the important things we have to say thanks for.

Sixty-five years ago the world said thanks to millions of soldiers and civilians who fought and died to make the world safe for freedom. How have we measured up to their hopes and expectations of so many years ago? Join me as I revisit my own very first Thanksgiving Day.

Day 92 Story - What Happens When Silence Strikes?

This post represents the completion of three months of stories on the 365 Stories in a Year blog. It’s a simple story, just a few words about silence and it’s causes.

This is another example of the problem people have with coming up with ideas for stories. Too many writers want the story to emerge fully formed before they start writing it. The truth is that most stories form during the writing process.

This story started with a single word – communication. As it turned out I changed the title of the post after I wrote it although it is still about communication. However, the story evolved as I wrote it. I recommend outlining non-fiction books and I know of one author who outlined a complete novel before writing it. I find that I cannot outline fiction because I create it during the writing process, not before.

So for those who wonder where story ideas come from, they come from anywhere, they come from random words, thoughts and actions, a vision, anywhere that thoughts come from. Ideas are all around us, ready to pick and enjoy at any time.

Day 91 Story - The Video is Finished

Yesterday I posted a story about my problems with getting a video filmed and ready for release. Today it is done and ready to go and you can read all about it at the 365 Stories in a Year blog.

I’m making a big deal out of this because it is quite a project and because the process can be quite instructive for all of you. And by the way any project like this can be the source of great stories. You may hear some more from me on it.

If you want to see the video, go to http://www.writingformarketers.com. You’ll learn quite a bit about writing and about marketing.

By the way, this is story 91 so we are one story shy of getting through 25 percent of the year with this project. Be sure to stop by tomorrow to see what I do as I pass this milestone.

See you tomorrow.

Day 90 Story - Improvisation

This story is about the ways I solved a batch of problems with a video project I’m doing. Making a video is easy. Adding the components that make it work well is more difficult. In this case I had to improvise at several points to get it all to happen.

The story (365 Stories in a Year blog) shows how I overcame the problems to finish the video in good order and make it work.

There are good pointers here for anyone trying to finish a creative endeavor.

Enjoy.

Day 89 Story - A Tale About Running

This story (365 Stories in a Year blog) is about a man who never runs but is finally convinced to run in a race he knows little about.

This is another vignette or character study to see how a person will react when placed in a given situation. This is a good way to get to know your characters in stories you write.

I chose the topic at random tonight, with no purpose in mind other than to write a story. We are at #89, which to me is phenomenal considering I’ve never written that many stories in a row ever.

Keep watching. More to come.
